Local Government Activities

 

David Carson engaged in a number of activities related to local government.

In October of 1776 the settlers of the western part of Fincastle County signed petitions for the creation of a separate county. Some of the signers of the petition were: Chas Cummings, John Logan, Robert Edmiston, James Crage, David Crage, Robt Crage, Samuel Evans, Robert Snodgrass, Thomas King, David Maxwell Jr, Alexr Campbell, Robert Buchanan, John Buchanan, William Kennedy, David Snodgrass, Samuel Edmiston, John Edmiston, Nathanael Brown, David Carson, and Collin Crilly.

In March of 1780, Washington County set the county levy for 1779 at $20 per tithable. The tax commissioners ( John Campbell, David Carson, and Alexander Montgomery. James Dysart, Robert Craig, and John Kinkead) were to collect the portion of the tax payable in commutable articles. David Watson was in the group named to the commission of peace. William Campbell was named the colonel of the county militia. Among the captains of the militia were: William Edmiston, William Edmiston, Jr, David Beatie, and David Beatie, Jr.

March 22, 1780, Washington County, Virginia Court, Present: William Campbell, James Montgomery, James Dysart, John Kinkead, John Snoddy, and Robert Craig.
Ordered that John Campbell, David Carson, and Allexander Montgomery appointed Commissioners of the Tax for 1788.

*David Carson served on the jury in the case of William Lewis, plantiff vs William Paine, defendant.
