David Carson was born about 1741 (not documented) and died about 1803. He lived and worked as a surveyor in and around Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. He was active in religious affairs, community affairs, and the military.

About 1765, he married Elizabeth Dysart (sister of Col. James D. Dysart?) who was born about 1745. Their fifth child (third son) was Joseph.

Joseph Carson, born July 2, 1777 in Abingdon Washington Co., Virginia and died March 2, 1815 in Mt Vernon, Rockcastle Co., Kentucky (Headstone, Elmwood Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Rockcastle Co., Kentucky, Section 1, Carson plot, "Joseph Carson was born July 2, 1777, dec March 2, 1815.").

(jwdw note: Went to my Rockcastle Co., KY Cemetery Book (compiled by cousin Jeanne Snodgrass Bonham & Patricia Heylmann Hiatt)) and found a couple of Stephen Langfords and both buried at the Elmwood Cemetery which is located in Mt. Vernon Bakers, at the intersection of Main Street & Old US Route #25 north east of the courthouse.

Elmwood Cemetery is a large cemetery & many of my old kinfolk are buried here. There is a Andrew Baker (1860-1899 buried here).

In Section I. There are some very old tombstones here and one with the name Stephen Langford (no dates). He's buried near, Mare N--- --rson (probably Carson), 181(3?) - 18 (53?) stone bad condition, and next to this tombstone is John Carson (4 Jan. 1844 -23 Apr 1853); Joseph C. Butcher (????) - 5 Aug 1841); Joseph Carson (2 Jul 1777 - 5 Aug 1815).
Not too far away is the other Stephen Langford and inscribed on his tombstone is: Stephen Langford "A Member of the Christian Church" 14 Oct. 1840 - 3 May 1870. It looks like the couple he is buried are his parents; William Langford, b. 1815 & Nancy Langford, b. 1822. And very close by is a William Pointer (1852-1937).

Jim,

I found this post very interesting as many of the names were tied to my Carson family who came from Abingdon, VA to Rockcastle Co., KY in 1800. There are many intermarriages with the Craig, Pointer, Dysart, Hiatt and Fish families.

You have a note about headstones in Elmwood Cemetery - one in particular showing MareN__ __rson b. 181_ d. 1853. This is my g-g-grandmother Marenda (Fish) Carson, first wife of John Evans Carson who is buried in Crab Orchard Cemetery, Lincoln Co. Marenda was born April 23, 1813 and died August 12, 1853. Near her grave is Joseph Carson who was born in Abingdon, VA 1777 and came to Rockcastle Co. with his brothers in 1800. His wife, Mary Evans, b.1776, d. 1864 is buried next to him. Joseph C. Butcher may be the father of David Butcher who married Betsy Carson, daughter of Joseph Carson and Mary Evans.

Any other information on the Carsons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for sharing!

Mary Dillon

[Note: Page 157 of "The Family History of Joseph Carson and Mary Evans Carson, Vol II" at the Rockcastle County Historical Society says that: the parents of David Butcher were William and Nancy Butcher; and Joseph C Butcher was the son of David Butcher and Elizabeth "Betsy" C Carson.]
