Information source: August 8, 1926 article in the The Herald (Miami, Florida) attached in the
scrape book. Key points:
1. Born February 17, 1846 in Madison, IN
2. parents died in Madison of cholera when he was three.
3. Raised by Josiah Hartley, livery stable owner.
4. Age 15, joined the Fighting Sixth Indiana Regiment of the T. J. Woods division.
5. Was POW at Andersonville Prison.
6. After the war married.
7. Occupations: horse trainer, jockey, drug clerk at W.H. Rogers in Madison, grocery clerk at John W. Thomas, then a carpenter for 30 years.
8. Read that Henry Flagler was building railroad through Florida. Decided to go from
Indiana to St. Augustine, Forida. (Note: youngest son was born in Indiana in 1884.)
9. In St. Augustine, Florida worked on the construction of the St. Augustine Hotel, the Ponce de Leon, and the Alcazar.
10. Went to Savannah, Georgia, to work on the DeSoto Hotel.
11. Returned to St. Augustine.
12. Went to Jacksonville, Florida to work in the ship yards.
13. Moved to Coconut Grove, Florida in 1894. Purchased land near Tigertail Road and Washington Street from Jackson Peacock.
14. In 1926 had 3 sons (must be including a son-in-law) and a daughter living in Miami. Son William S. Thomas had died earlier.
