The Carson Family

From Washington County, Virginia
To Rockcastle County, Kentucky
To Jellico, Tennessee
To Davie, Broward County, Florida

Who were David Carson's Parents?

David Carson is the earliest family member in this Carson line that we are able to identify. There is no agreement on who are his parents or from where he came. He was in Washington County, Virginia as early as 1772. (At that time he was already married to Elizabeth Dysart.)

Washington County is located in the southwestern corner of Virginia at the southern end of the Shenandoah Valley.

PENNSYLVANIA CARSON CONNECTION?

There are a number of Carson family researchers who believe that David Carson, the deputy surveyor of Washington County, Virginia (1741 - 1803) is the son of the Samuel Carson who left a will in York County, Pennsylvania.

York County, Pennsylvania Wills, 1749-1819
Surname: Carson
Given Name: Samuel
Residence: Mt. Pleasant Township
Date: 28 Sep 1759
Prove Date: 28 Apr 1760
Remarks: Carson, Samuel. Sep. 28, 1759. Executors: Janeat and David Carson. Mount Pleasant Township. Wife: Janeat Carson. Children: Elizabeth, David, William, and Samuel.

According to "Kentucky Pioneers & their Descendants" compiled by Ila Earle Fowler, "David Carson, the son of Samuel Carson who left a will in York Co. PA Will Book A, page 216. He named three sons: Carson, of age, William Carson, a minor, and Samuel Carson, a minor. Executor, David Carson; Executrix, Jannet."

The same assumption is made in the "Carson-Bent-Boggs Genealogy, Supplement." by McClung, page 143 and page 280)

Other Carson family researchers believe that the David Carson mentioned in the York County will was the David Carson of Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania who married Susanna McBride, the daughter of Andrew McBride.

What makes this debate interesting is the belief by some researchers that the Samuel Carson of York County, Pennsylvania was the brother of William Carson, who was the grandfather of the Christopher "Kit" Houston Carson, the famous woodsman. (DNA studies suggest that Kit Carson was in the Haplogroup I2b1.)

Many of the Carson Family histories found on the internet are based on the undocumented story of Alexander Harvey Carson.
