James Holman (Holdman, Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and Rockcastle. On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston

What is now Kentucky was part of Fincastle County, Virginia. In 1775, it became Kentucky County, Virginia. Kentucky became a state in 1792. Garrard County was created in December of 1796 from Madison, Lincoln, and Mercer counties. Beginning in 1779 settlers moved into this area and following the Battle of Blue Licks, large numbers arrived. (The surrender by Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown ended the War in the east, but the war continued on the frontier with the Canadians and Indians trying to drive out the Kentucky settlers. The Battle of Blue Licks in 1782 was an ambush on the Americans, including Daniel Boone, following the siege of Bryan's Station.)

The Gilbert's Creek Baptist Church is located on Gilbert's Creek on the Lancaster and Crab Orchard Pike (Rt 39) in Garrard County. The Reverend Ben Polsten (who married James Holman and Martha Ramsey on June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky) represented the church at one of the meetings of the South District Association of Separate Baptists.

James Holman and Martha Ramsey were in the 1840 census for Garrard County, Kentucky (Males - Under 5: one; Males - 15 thru 19: one; Males - 20 thru 29: one; Females - Under 5: two; Females - 20 thru 29: one; Slave - Female - 10 thru 23: one. On the same page was Johnson Ramsey, the brother of the Martha Ramsey who married James Holman.

James Holman and Martha Ramsey were in the 1850 census in Lincoln County, Kentucky with their children: Mary, James, Amanda, Sally, Daniel, Thom, Mildred, and W. H.

James Holdman of Garrard County on February 26, 1857 purchased eleven and one-half acres on Drakes Creek (lot #6) from John F Sudduth and wife. (Land that Mary Ann Sudduth inherited from her father, Daniel McQuery.) (Garrard Deed Book U, page 179 -180)

James Holman and wife Martha F Holman of Garrard County on March 2, 1860 (taxes paid March 12, 1860) sold eleven and one-half acres on waters of Drakes Creek for $130 to Flavius Josephus Conn (the lot of land allotted to John F Suddith and wife for division and allotment of land of Daniel McQuerry, deceased. (Garrard County Deed Book V, page 127, #5724)

James Holman (listed as a farmer) and Martha were in the 1860 census in Garrard County, Kentucky with their children: Amanda, James, Sarah, Daniel, Thomas, M.E., William, Francis, Madison, and Samuel. A nearby neighbor was Ancel George and his wife Mary Ramsey, the sister of Martha Ramsey.

James Holman (listed as a wagon maker and smith) and Martha were in the 1870 census in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky with their children: Thom (listed as a hack driver), Mildred E., William (listed as a farm laborer), Francis, Madison (listed as a farm laborer and in school) and Samuel D. (listed as in school). Nearby neighbors were: their daughter, Amanda (Holman) Tatem and her family; Julia Lindsey, the future wife of Madison; and Elizabeth Melvin, future wife of Thomas.

Ramsey Family

In 1781, the Reverend Lewis Craig and the members of Upper Spottsylvania Baptist Church in Virginia relocated to Kentucky. Because of Indian attacks, they were forced to temporarily stay in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia, but soon they crossed the Cumberland Gap, and took the Wilderness Road and the Skagg's Trace to Logan's Fort. They established "Craig's Station" on a little tributary of Dick's River, now known as Gilbert's Creek, in the part of Lincoln County that became Garrard County, Kentucky. There was a "Ramsey" in this group.

I believe this "Ramsey" was the Thomas Ramsey (1756-1843) who married Martha "Patsy" Gouldman. Thomas Ramsey (1756-1843) was the father of Alexander Ramsey (1783-1867); and the grandfather of the Martha Ramsey (c1815-1886) who married James Holeman.

Elkins Family

There were two different Elkins Families in Garrard county.

The Baptist group headed by the Reverend Lewis Craig was joined in Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia by another group of settlers waiting to travel into Kentucky. (This was the group organized by Captain Billy Bush, his extended family, and neighbors from Orange and Culpepper counties in Virginia.) Reverend Lewis Craig organized the Bush group into a Baptist Church, and the group chose the Reverend Robert Elkin, a Baptist preacher, as their pastor. In 1783, Reverend Lewis Craig and most of his congregation moved from Gilbert's Creek in Garrard County, Kentucky to South Elkhorn, Kentucky. Just as the Craig group was leaving Gilbert's Creek, the Bush group was arriving. (They had remained in the Abingdon area until the end of the War.) In the spring of 1784, the Bush group relocated from Gilbert's Creek to the north side of the Kentucky River. Its pioneer members settled on Howard's Creek in what is now Clark County, Kentucky. I have found no indications that any members of the family of the Reverend Robert Elkin remained in Garrard County, Kentucky.

John Elkins and his son the Reverend Henry Elkins were in the 1830 census for Laurel County, Kentucky. Both men were in the 1840 census for the Western Division of Madison County, Kentucky. The Reverend Henry Elkins (1799-c1870) was the father of the Henderson Elkins who married Elizabeth Ann Tatum; and the grandfather of Matilda Elkins who married James Alexander Holeman, son of James Holeman and Martha Ramsey. * the Elizabeth Ann Tatum who married Henderson Elkins, son of Rev Henry Elkins.

* the William Price Tatum who married Amanda M. Holeman, daughter of James Holeman and Martha Ramsey.

Kennedy Family

On the Rootsweb KYGARRAR site, Kennedy family reseacher, "mkennedy2009" (Mona Kennedy), reported:

During the early settlement of Kentucky, John Kennedy and sons John Jr., Gen. Tom, Joseph, Andrew, and "Bully Dave" Kennedy came into the Madison, Lincoln county area. A little later, a half brother of John Kennedy, named James Kennedy, came into the same area. He remained in the area and is buried at Paint Lick in Garrard County, Kentucky.

On the same website, "CabinSue" posted an article that was written in the Lvl Courier-Journal and picked up by the Chicago Tribune, dated 2 Jan 1878, which began "The name of Kennedy, for half a century a power for much evil in Garrard, Lincoln, and Madison counties, has of late become so notorious..."
On the website were a series of newspaper articles outlining the misdeeds of:
* the descendants of David "Bully" Kennedy, son of the half-brother, John Kennedy, and
* the descendants of Andrew Anderson Kennedy, son of the half-brother, James Kennedy.

Graham Family

Mary Graham, the daughter of Lt. John Graham, married Thomas Holman on April 19, 1792 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Thomas Holman (c1765-1850) was the son of Isaac Holeman, died 1808. Thomas Holman (c1765-1850) and Mary Graham had a son, Thomas Woodford Holeman (1814-1862) who in 1850 in Mercer County, Kentucky married Sarah Bright Kennedy (1826-1902) daughter of Philip Kennedy (1790-1857) and Sarah Bright.

Note: Mercer County was created October 17, 1785 from Lincoln County, Kentucky.

Notes from:
The Rogers Family of Paint Lick and Crab Orchard, by Lyndon N. Irwin, Ph.D

Revolutionary War Patriot Lt. John Graham of Rowan County, North Carolina and Garrard County, Kentucky

Lieutenant John Graham was born in 1742, in North Carolina. It is well documented that John lived for many years in Rowan County, North Carolina.

John Graham probably left Rowan County, North Carolina, in the mid-1780's. On October 12, 1785, John Graham and wife, Margaret, sold 318 acres on both sides of Hunting Creek in the Forks of the Yadkin River. The land being sold adjoined property owned by James Andrews, John McGuire, S.D. Brandon, and Brice Gather (Deed Book 11, page 496).

John Graham next appears in Kentucky records. He first resided in Lincoln County. One of the earliest mentions of John Graham, in Kentucky, was in a June 19, 1787, Lincoln County Court Order Book:

"John Grimes" is appointed overseer of the road from Baylor's Mill to the North Fork of Gilberts Creek, in place of Walker Baylor.

The following is a list of known children of John and Margaret Graham:
Enoch Graham
Thomas Graham
John Graham Jr.
Margaret (Peggy) Graham
Martha Graham
Mary Graham
Elizabeth Graham

The Garrard County census taken in 1810 listed John Graham. Listed were one male, age 16-26; two males 45 and up; two females ages 16-18; and one female 45 and up. Only John was listed by name, so there is no way to determine the identity of the extra older man.
