James Holman (Holdman, Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and Rockcastle. On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston

The results of the DNA tests show that the descendant of James Holeman, b. 1814 is:

"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Daniel Holman who was born about 1787 in North Carolina, had children in Tennessee, and homesteaded in Douglas County, Missouri;

"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Kenneth Holeman who died in 1871 in Upperfreehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey who is thought to be a descendant of Robert Holeman, died 1709 in New Jersey;

"related" to a descendant of the Elias Holeman (1759 - 1827, Burlington County, New Jersey); and

"related" to the descendants of Thomas Holeman, who was born about 1723 in Kent County, Maryland; and who moved from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to North Carolina about 1750, and died there in 1798.

Excerpts from:
Hosick (Hosack) Families, by Eugene E. Trimble
December 31, 1971, Revised October 25, 2000

Second Generation

Alexander Hosick (Hoseck, Hossick, etc.); born Greenbrier Co., VA (now West Virginia), 1778; died Livingston Co., KY, after Feb. 1, 1853 and before Sept. 27, 1854; married Madison Co., KY, Jan. 11, 1805, Hanna Wilson (born 1775-1780; died Livingston Co., 1840-1850). Children as shown in a division of slaves of Alexander Hosick (with the exception of a probable daughter shown only in the 1810 census of Livingston Co:
10. Probably a daughter; name unknown; born 1805-1810; not shown later; apparently died young.
+ 11. William: born 1806-1807; living 1850; died prior to July 29, 1863.
+ 12. Sarah; born 1805-1810; died 1842-1846.
+ 13. James; born 1809-1810; living in 1850; died before Feb. 1, 1853.
+ 14. Jane; born Dec. 17, 1814; died June 13, 1850.
+ 15. Rachel; born June 20, 1817; died June 7, 1893.

Hanna Wilson was the daughter of Thomas Wilson of Rowan County, NC, who was born about 1745, place unknown, and died before 1790, possibly Kentucky or North Carolina; married (bond) Rowan Co., N. C., Jan. 22, 1767, Catherine Livingston (bond shows Cath. Leviston; daughter of William Todd Livingston and Sarah [Ware?] Livingston). Children as shown in Madison Co., KY, deed book record:
(1) William;
(2) Sarah; married James Holeman;
(3) Hanna or Hannah who married Alexander Hosick

The marriage of Alexander Hosick and Hanna Wilson is recorded in Madison Co., KY, Jan. 11, 1805 and Aquilla Snow, brother-in-law of Alexander Hosick signed as security.

Alexander moved from Madison Co., KY to Livingston Co., KY about 1809 and lived in Livingston County the rest of his life. He is shown in the 1810 census of Livingston Co., KY with two males and two females, all born 1800-1810 and he and Hanna are shown as being born 1765-1784. Alexander is shown in the 1820 census of Livingston County with one male born 1805-1810; one male born 1810-1820; one female born 1805-1810; two females born 1810-1820 and he and Hanna are shown as being born prior to 1776.

The old Alexander Hosick home stood on the bank of the Ohio River about midway between the towns of Bayou and Birdsville, KY, a short distance upstream from the mouth of Phelps Creek.

The last Hosick member to live in Livingston County, known by the writer (Mr. Owen Trimble Lay) was James Hosick who probably was born in the early 1890's. He was an orphan, and lived with Mr. And Mrs. Frank Armstrong, whose wife was either a Hosick or related to them.

The Hosicks also owned what later became the Markey farm, the Armstrong farm and the J. W. Jewell farm; all now owned by George McGrew.

William Holman and his family lived in a cabin on the farm of the Armstrongs whom the Holman children called uncle and aunt. Thomas Holman was a farm laborer or small share crop farmer. The Armstrongs had no children.

“Frank Armstrong, William Holman and Thomas Holman were in the so-called Union Home guards, called locally the ‘bushwhackers’, and they were in the group that raided the home of Isaac Trimble (whose deceased wife Jane was the aunt of the Holman boys). [Note: William Holeman, Sr. died in 1851.]

The marker of Rachel (Hosick) Holman which reads “Rachel wife of Wm. Holman June 20, 1817 - June 7, 1893.” This old “Parker” cemetery is on the bluff overlooking the Ohio River just up-river from Birdsville, Ky., on land presently owned by Mrs. Effie (Lay) Clark and is on land once owned by Alexander Hosick whose home was just down the steep bluff near the Ohio River on the up-river side of Phelps Creek.

74. James A.; born 1850-1851 (?); living July 14, 1860 and 1870.

The above deeds do not indicate the mother however, from subsequent census records it appears that the two youngest children shown above of William Holman were from his second wife Rachel Hosick. William Holman’s two wives were sisters.

Rachel Hosick is buried in a small cemetery on the bluff overlooking the Ohio River behind where her father’s house stood. The grave is marked “Rachel wife of Wm. Holman June 20, 1817 - June 7, 1893.”
