James Holman (Holdman, Holeman)
Born: about 1814 in Kentucky
Died: after 1880

***

James Holman (Holdman, Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and Rockcastle. On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston

What is now Kentucky was part of Fincastle County, Virginia. In 1775, it became Kentucky County, Virginia. Kentucky became a state in 1792. Garrard County was created in December of 1796 from Madison, Lincoln, and Mercer counties. Beginning in 1779 settlers moved into this area and following the Battle of Blue Licks, large numbers arrived. (The surrender by Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown ended the War in the east, but the war continued on the frontier with the Canadians and Indians trying to drive out the Kentucky settlers. The Battle of Blue Licks in 1782 was an ambush on the Americans, including Daniel Boone, following the siege of Bryan's Station.)

The Gilbert's Creek Baptist Church is located on Gilbert's Creek on the Lancaster and Crab Orchard Pike (Rt 39) in Garrard County. The Reverend Ben Polsten (who married James Holman and Martha Ramsey on June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky) represented the church at one of the meetings of the South District Association of Separate Baptists.

James Holman and Martha Ramsey were in the 1840 census for Garrard County, Kentucky (Males - Under 5: one; Males - 15 thru 19: one; Males - 20 thru 29: one; Females - Under 5: two; Females - 20 thru 29: one; Slave - Female - 10 thru 23: one. On the same page was Johnson Ramsey, the brother of the Martha Ramsey who married James Holman.

James Holman and Martha Ramsey were in the 1850 census in Lincoln County, Kentucky with their children: Mary, James, Amanda, Sally, Daniel, Thom, Mildred, and W. H.

James Holdman of Garrard County on February 26, 1857 purchased eleven and one-half acres on Drakes Creek (lot #6) from John F Sudduth and wife. (Land that Mary Ann Sudduth inherited from her father, Daniel McQuery.)
(Garrard Deed Book U, page 179 -180)

James Holman and wife Martha F Holman of Garrard County on March 2, 1860 (taxes paid March 12, 1860) sold eleven and one-half acres on waters of Drakes Creek for $130 to Flavius Josephus Conn (the lot of land allotted to John F Suddith and wife for division and allotment of land of Daniel McQuerry, deceased. (Garrard County Deed Book V, page 127, #5724)

James Holman (listed as a farmer) and Martha were in the 1860 census in Garrard County, Kentucky with their children: Amanda, James, Sarah, Daniel, Thomas, M.E., William, Francis, Madison, and Samuel. A nearby neighbor was Ancel George and his wife Mary, the sister of Martha Ramsey.

James Holman (listed as a wagon maker and smith) and Martha were in the 1870 census in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky with their children: Thom (listed as a hack driver), Mildred E., William (listed as a farm laborer), Francis, Madison (listed as a farm laborer and in school) and Samuel D. (listed as in school). Nearby neighbors were: their daughter, Amanda (Holman) Tatem and her family; Julia Lindsey, the future wife of Madison; and Elizabeth Melvin, future wife of Thomas.

--

The parents of Martha Ramsey (c1815-1886) are Alexander Ramsey and Nancy Nelson. They were in the Garrard County, Kentucky Census of 1820-1830-1840-1850-1860 and were members of the Gilbert's Creek Baptist Church. The Ramsey family may have arrived in 1781 at Gilbert's Creek, Garrard County, Kentucky with Rev Lewis Craig and the members of the Traveling Church.

I have not been able to identify the father of James Holman (c1814-bef.1886), but a leading candidate is the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Elkins on June 14, 1809 in Madison County, Kentucky (bondsman Richard Johnson). This assumes that Daniel Holman is not a direct descendant of Joseph Holman of Madison County, Kentucky.

This Rebecca Elkins appears to be in Madison County, Kentucky before the arrival of the Rev Henry Elkins family of Madison/Garrard counties. She may be related to the Rev Robert Elkins family in Clark County?

Timeline for the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Elkins

---------

Kentucky 1800 tax list:

Daniel Holeman Woodford County, Kentucky [Daniel Holeman (1750-1836), son of Isaac Holeman, died 1808]

Daniel Holman Hardin County, Kentucky [I believe this is the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Johnson.]

Daniel Hillman Mason County, Kentucky [Who is this?]

---

1808 Madison County tax list

There is a Daniel Holman in the 1808 Madison County tax list. I believe this is the Daniel Holman of Madison County who married Rebecca Elkins.

However, this could be the Daniel Holman of Hardin County, Kentucky. His daughter Sarah (Holman) Rice was born in Madison County, Kentucky on April 1, 1824. Even though Daniel was in the 1800 Kentucky Tax List for Hardin County, he did not receive his Kentucky Land Grants for Hardin County until 1809 and 1810.

Some Holman family researchers believe that all of the Holmans in the Madison County Tax Records are the family of Joseph Holman (son of Thomas Holeman, died 1798, of Wilkes County, North Carolina) and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson. However, I have found no evidence to show that the listed Daniel Holman is a son of Joseph Holman and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson.

Joseph Holman (son of Thomas Holeman, died 1798, of Wilkes County, North Carolina) had a brother, Daniel Holman (c1750-1820). This is the Daniel Holeman (1750-1820) of Robertson County, Tennessee. I do not believe that he is the Daniel Holman listed in the 1808 Madison County tax list. [Note: Marriages of Sumner Co., Tennessee, 1787-1838 page 40. "Daniel Holman & Polly Exum, April 26, 1817. Who could be the father of the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Elkins? Holman men from different lines are connected to the area in and around Madison County, Kentucky.

Madison County formed from Lincoln County in 1785. (Kentucky established as a State in 1792.)
Clark County formed from Fayette and old Bourbon counties in 1792. Estill County formed from Madison & Clark counties in 1808.

Knox county, Kentucky was created in 1799 from Lincoln County. Laurel County was created in 1825 from Clay, Rockcastle, Whitley and Knox Counties. Bell County was created in 1867 from Harlan and Knox counties.

Grayson County, Kentucky was created in 1810 from Hardin and Ohio Counties.

Anderson County, Kentucky was created in 1827 from Franklin, Mercer and Washington Counties (west of Woodford County, Kentucky)]

Descendants of Thomas Holeman, died in 1798 in Wilkes County, North Carolina were in the area around Madison County, Kentucky.

--

Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819), the son of Thomas Holman (born c1723 in Maryland; lived in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia; and relocated to and died in 1798 in Wilkes County, North Carolina) and the first wife of Thomas, is thought to be the Joseph Holman on the Fayette County tax list for 1788 (Kentucky not yet a state; still part of Virginia). Joseph's sons (Joseph and William) married daughters of Elias Barnes and Rebecah Turner and relocated from Madison County, Kentucky to Missouri. Joseph's son, John, married Nancy Martin and remained in Madison County. Joseph's daughter, Elizabeth, married Joshua Moran and they remained in Madison County. The James Holman [who married the step-daughter of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819) and lived in Campbell County, Kentucky] is thought to be a son of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819), but I have doubts about this. The Daniel Holman, who in 1809 in Madison County, Kentucky married Rebecca Elkins, is thought to be a son of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819), but I have doubts about this. [If the James Holman who married the step-daughter of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819) is not the son of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819), it raises the possibility that this James Holman may be the father of the Daniel Holman, who married Rebecca Elkins.]

[See Madison County, Kentucky]

James Holman (1799-1886), the grandson of Thomas Holman (born c1723 in Maryland; lived in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia; and relocated to and died in 1798 in Wilkes County, North Carolina) and the second wife of Thomas, married Susanna Stanberry (1804-1886) in 1835 in Laurel County, Kentucky. The 1850 Laurel County census for James and Susanne (Stanberry) Holdman lists: her niece, Malinda Stansbury; two Holdman children born prior to this marriage (Thos, born 1824 and Permelia, born 1829); and a James Holdman, born 1787 in North Carolina. [Who is the James Holdman, born 1787 in North Carolina? Could he be the James Holman
who married the step-daughter of Joseph Holman (c1745-c1819)]

[See Knox County, Kentucky]

--

Asa Holeman (great grandson of Thomas Holeman, died in 1798):
born: about 1812 in Wilkes County, North Carolina;
married: Almira M Bowman in 1833 in Wilkes County, North Carolina;
received land grant in 1855 in Watauga, North Carolina
in 1860 census for Johnson County, Tennessee;
in 1870 census for Estill County, Kentucky.

Three sons of Asa Holeman,1812-1903,and Almira M Bowman were in the census for Estill County, Kentucky:
* James M Holman (1844-1924) who married Rachel Farley
* Alfred L Holeman (born 1848 in North Carolina) who married Anna Nolan and Mary J Johnson
* John Holeman (born 1856) who married Mary L Daughetee on April 03, 1880 in Estill County, Kentucky

[See Estill County, Kentucky]

Descendants of Isaac Holeman, died 1808, of Davie County, North Carolina and his wife Mary Benton Hardy were in the area around Madison County, Kentucky.

--

Daniel Holeman,1750-1836, (son of Isaac Holeman, died 1808) and his wife, Nancy Ann Saunders were listed on the Fayette County tax list for 1788. (Kentucky not yet a state; still part of Virginia). They were in the census for Woodford County in 1800 and 1810, and then about 1815 they and their adult children moved south through Kentucky into Tennessee.

--

Elizabeth Holeman, daughter of Isaac Holeman, died 1808, married Isaac Johnson (1745-1814) in 1803 and relocated from Davie County, North Carolina to Jessamine County, Kentucky (1810 Census Jessamine county, Kentucky). Two sons of Isaac Johnson (1745-1814) and Elizabeth Holeman (1751-1840) "engaged" in the military on Nov 19, 1813 (Holman Johnson and Isaac Johnson). They served as a privates in Capt. Jacob Elliston's Company of Col. Richard Johnson's regiment of Kentucky Mounted Infantry. They enlisted from Franklin County May 20, 1813. [Note: Anderson County, Kentucky (adjacent to Woodford County) was created January 16, 1827 from Franklin, Mercer and Washington Counties.] The regiment was first Americans to come upon the Battlefield from Raisin River Massacre, gathering what remains could be found. They also served during the Battle of Thames Canada on October 5, 1813, where Tecumseh was killed. A Reuben Holeman "engaged" on the same date. Is this their first cousin, the son of the Reuben Holeman (b 1759) who married Mary "Polly" Cook, or is this their first cousin, the son of Thomas Holeman (c1765-1850) and Mary Graham

--

Isaac Hardy Holeman (1757-1843), son of Isaac Holeman, died 1808, relocated from North Carolina in 1799 to Woodford County, Kentucky, and again relocated to Clark County, Indiana about 1800. [Note: Some Holman researchers believe that Isaac Hardy Holeman (1757-1843) and his first wife, Catherine Wilcox(son) had a son Daniel Holeman, born 1778 and this is the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Johnson. I have found no evidence to support this.]

--

Reuben Holeman (1759-1829) [Son of Isaac, died 1808] married Mary "Polly" Cook in 1787 in Rowan County, North Carolina (daughter of the Rev. William Cook). (1800 census in Salisbury, Iredell County, North Carolina.) Their sons:
** Reuben Holeman, born 1786, married Mary Riley on Jan 05, 1809 in Fayette County, Kentucky. [Anderson County, Kentucky was created in 1827 from Franklin, Mercer and Washington Counties.] The 1810 Census for Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky includes: Reuben Holeman, Isaac Johnson, Originals Williams, and Charles Campbell.
** Isaac W Holeman (1783-1843) married Elizabeth Donaldson (1787-1850) and had son, William Simpson Holeman (1815-1890) who married Susan Curry (born May 19, 1814 in Fayette County, Kentucky.

--

Thomas Holeman (1765-1850) [Son of Isaac, died 1808] married Mary Graham on July 9, 1792 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He was on the 1800 Jessamine County, Kentucky tax list and in the 1810 & 1820 Census in Mercer County, Kentucky. Their son:
* Reuben Holeman (born 1794 in Kentucky), was in the Anderson County Census for 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. [Note: Anderson County, Mercer County, and Jessamine County are adjacent to Woodford County, Kentucky.]

Richard Holeman and Thomas Holeman are not related. Richard Holman (born 1762 in London, England; died March 25, 1837) and his son, Lanty Holman (born 1793; died 1834) are both buried in the New Providence Presbyterian Cemetery, Mercer County, Kentucky.

--

Patience Holeman (1765-1846) [Daughter of Isaac, died 1808] with her husband, James Dean, moved to Woodford County, Kentucky about 1787. In 1803 they followed her sister Elizabeth (Holeman) Johnson to Jessamine County, Kentucky.
[Note: Jessamine County, Kentucky is between Madison and Woodford Counties.]

Descendants of the James River Holmans

--

Captain Tandy Holman (born c1756 in Caroline County, Virginia, lived in Estill County, Kentucky, and died 1836 in Clark County, Kentucky) descends from the William Holman (born c1658) who married Ann Tandy. It appears that Capt Holman relocated from the James River area of Virginia directly to the old Bourbon County area of Kentucky (1800 census for Clark County, and 1810 census for Estill County).

--

John Holman (born Dec 25, 1736 in Goochland County, Virginia and died c1837 in Hempstead County, Arkansas) was the grandson of Capt James Holeman of the James River area in Virginia. John Holman married Eliz. Burton May 20, 1770 in St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia. He was in the 1810 census for Grayson County, Kentucky. In his pension application he stated:
1783-1784 then to Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky, where he raised two crops
c. 1785-1792 thence further down in Kentucky, within six or eight miles of Bairdstown, Nelson Co., Kentucky where he resided about seven years
c. 1793-1805 thence twenty miles further on to a place called Rough Creek, Hardin County, Kentucky where he resided about twelve years

James Burton Holman (born 1780 in Powell's Valley, Virginia and died 1876 in Lamar County, Texas) was the son of John and Elizabeth (Burton) Holman. James Burton Holman was in the 1810 census for Grayson County, Kentucky. He first married Rebecca Mcneil on September 18, 1805 in Hardin County, Kentucky; then Rebecca Tong on April 14, 1809 in Ohio County, Kentucky; and finally the widow, Esther Court Mack, on January 19, 1858 in Lamar County, Texas. [See Hardin County, Kentucky]

Descendants of the Kent County, Maryland Holmans

--

Edward Holeman (born 1760 in Kent County, Maryland and died 1842 in Callaway County, Missouri), the grandson of Edward Holeman and his wife Rosata VanSant of Kent County, Maryland received a Kentucky Land Grant for more than 2500 acres on Rough Creek (also known as No Linn or Nolin Creek) in 1798 in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Henry Holeman (1735-1789) and Edward Holeman (1741-1818), sons of Edward Holeman of Kent County, Maryland (born about 1700) and his wife Rosata VanSant:
* started in Kent County, Maryland
* went west (to or near the Holman fort in Shenandoah County, Virginia?)
* probably followed the same trail used by George Washington during the French and Indian War to reach the Monongahela River
* stayed in southwestern Pennsylvania (in an area also claimed by the colony of Virginia)
* In 1776, migrated down the Ohio River Valley to the part of Fayette County, Virginia that was cut off to form Woodford County, Kentucky.

(See Livingston County, Kentucky)

Descendants of of Old Daniel Holman of the Shenandoah Valley Kentucky

--

Jacob Harrod Holeman (1793-1857), son of Andrew Holman and Elizabeth "Betsey" Rader, married Mary Ann Wake in 1821 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Jacob and Mary Ann had a son Alexander Wake Holeman (1827-1887) who was a Colonel in the Kentucky 11th Cavalry Regiment.

Other unidentified Daniel Holmans

In addition to the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Elkins and the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Johnson, I have not been able to identify these men:

--

* Daniel and Sally Holman of Washington County and Hardin County, Kentucky

Daniel Elmo Mclure, Jr. in "1776-1976 TWO CENTURIES IN ELIZABETHTOWN AND HARDIN COUNTY, KENTUCKY" states
"Robert Nall, born July 1, 1804, died April 6,1876, married Elizabeth Holman, born in 1805, a daughter of Daniel and Sally Holman of Washington County, who had migrated to that place from Virginia and later moved to Hardin County..."

On May 22, 1799 in Hardin County, a Daniel Holman married a Sarah Williams. [This does not appear to be the Daniel Holman, who in 1809 in Madison County, Kentucky married Rebecca Elkins; or the Daniel Holman, who was born c1775 in Virginia and married Rebecca Johnson.]
