James Holman (Holdman, Holeman)
Born: about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky
Died: about 1886 in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky

James Holman (Holdman, Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and Rockcastle. (At one time part of Garrard County was the western part of Madison County.)

On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston

I have been unable to find the parents of James Holman (born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky) in or around Madison County. The Holeman/Holman Newsletter shows just one Holman family in Madison County - Joseph Holeman, a son of Thomas Holeman of Wilkes County, North Carolina (d. ca 1798).

Also, I have been unable to find the parents of James Holman (born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky) among the Holmans in the Kentucky counties to the west: Woodford and Hardin.

There is a Holman in the one of the counties to the east - Estill County. Estill County, Kentucky was formed in 1808 from land given by Clark and Madison counties.

Bourbon County was established in 1785 from a portion of Fayette County, Virginia. "Old Bourbon" was much larger area than present-day Bourbon County. Whiskey was an early product of the area, and whiskey barrels from the area were shipped downriver from the port on the Ohio River originally known as "The Point" or Limestone, and now Maysville. The port was in old Bourbon County until the borders were redrawn in 1789 when it became part of the Mason County of Virginia, and it is now in Mason County, Kentucky.

Mason County, Kentucky was partitioned from Bourbon County, and is eighth in order of formation. At its formation, Mason County included one-fourth of the territory of Kentucky in that part of the state east of the Licking River. Nineteen counties were later carved from the huge swath of geography that ran from what is now Campbell County at the northernmost point of the state, all the way to Pike County on the Virginia border. Brown County, Ohio is across the Ohio River from Mason County, Kentucky.

THE OLD MAYSVILLE ROAD by Samuel M Wilson (The Ohio Historical Society, Vol. 18, Page 443) discusses transportation from the Atlantic states to this area of the Ohio River valley:
"The opening of Zane's Trace from Wheeling, in Western Virginia, through Southeastern Ohio to Limestone or Maysville on the Kentucky shore of the Ohio, was expressly authorized by an Act of Congress which became a law on the 17th of May, 1796. Its route lay through Zanesville, Lancaster, Chillicothe, and Aberdeen, Ohio, while its termini were Wheeling in Virginia and Limestone in Kentucky. Besides furnishing better and more dependable facilities for the transmission of the mails, Zane's trace was designed primarily to afford a landward route of travel from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the other middle and north Atlantic States. Prior to the construction of this pioneer pathway, the principal avenue for travel to and from Kentucky was Boone's Blazed Trail through Cumberland Gap, later known as the Wilderness Road, and still later as the Wilderness Turnpike Road, while the water route by way of the Ohio, with the cessation of Indian warfare, was daily growing in importance. Added to the dangers from attacks of hostile Indians, there was throughout much of the year an embarrassing uncertainty in the stage of the water in the Ohio, the upstream journey was a serious undertaking at best, and then as now the travel up and down the river was seriously impeded by protracted droughts in the summer time, which made navigation difficult and sometimes impossible.
The pioneer road which connected Maysville and Lexington followed in a general sort of way the old buffalo trail which led into the interior from or near the mouth of Limestone Creek on the Ohio River, across the Licking, at or near the Lower Blue Licks, and thence crossing North Elkhorn Creek at a point afterwards known as Bryan's Station, on through Lexington, to the Kentucky River and beyond. Maysville. although incorporated as a town by that name in 1787, was, until after 1800, generally known as "Limestone", and in the region immediately around the town, was often called "The Point". The old wagon road, which followed more or less closely the buffalo trail above mentioned from Limestone to Lexington, was frequently spoken of in 1784-1785, as "Smith's Wagon Road" because in the summer of 1783 and earlier, one Smith of Lexington was the first that traveled it with a wagon.
There can be little doubt that the Indians and their British-Canadian allies and leaders, who attacked the Fort at Boonesboro and laid siege to Bryan Station and triumphed in the bloody disaster at the Blue Licks, followed, to some extent, at least, this primitive roadway."

Clark County was created 1792 from Bourbon and Fayette Counties Kentucky when Kentucky became a separate state.

Many pioneers traveled through nearby Fort Boonesborough (alternatively known as Fort Boonesboro) in Madison County, Kentucky, before establishing permanent settlements in Clark County. Among the early settlers was a group of forty Baptist families led by Capt. William Bush, who settled on Lower Howard's Creek in 1775.

William Bush (born June 26, 1746 in St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, Virginia; died July 26, 1815 in Clark County, Kentucky) founded the Bush Settlement on Lower Howard's Creek in what is now Clark County, Kentucky. He was the son of Philip Bush and Mary Bryan.

William Bush, known as Captain Billy Bush, was part of the group of frontiersmen that Daniel Boone recruited to blaze the trail through Cumberland Gap. On March 10th, 1775, Daniel Boone, left Long Island (Virginia) with a party of thirty riflemen to seek out and mark the proposed Trace. The group included Squire Boone, Michael Stoner, William Bush, and Benjamin Cutberth.

Captain Billy Bush then persuaded forty families of Orange and Culpepper counties in Virginia (his brothers Josiah, Philip Jr., Ambrose, Francis, and sister Mary) to form a colony in Kentucky. They reached the frontier fort at the Holston River in December 1780, and learned that because of Indian attacks it was not safe to go further. They remained at the fort for three years, during which time other families planning to go to Kentucky joined them. Reverend Lewis Craig (of the Traveling Church) organized the group into a Baptist Church, and the group chose the Reverend Robert Elkin, a Baptist preacher, as their pastor.

On September 1, 1783, the colony again started on their journey on the Wilderness Road. The colony reached Craig's station, near what is now Lancaster, Lincoln County, Kentucky where they again tarried until the fall of 1784. Here they separated: some of them going to the southwestern part of Kentucky; and the majority of them to the north side of the Kentucky River to the land located by Captain Billy Bush. (He avoided the legal problems with the Transylvania Company by claiming land just outside the border of the land the company purchased from the Indians.)

The congregation held their first official service in the cabin of Captain Billy Bush. About 1793, they built a stone church building which became known as "The Old Stone Church". Later, the church became known as Providence Church and it is of the Baptist denomination. Reverend Robert Elkin is thought to be buried there.

The records of Providence Church state "A company of Baptists came from the older parts of Virginia to Holston River, in December 1780 . . . Robert Elkin minister and John Vivian elder, and in January, 1781, they, with other Baptists, formed themselves into a body, in order to carry on church discipline and in September the 28th, 1781, became constituted by Lewis Craig and John Vivian, with the members, to witness (followed by a list of 42 names). The church remained in the Holston colony until the 1st day of September 1783, when the principal part of the members moved to Kentucky, carrying their church constitution with them. They settled on Howard's Creek, near Boonesboro, Kentucky and held services.

William Bush (1746-1815) in 1778 in Orange County, Virginia married Frances Tandy Burris (born 1762 in Orange County, Virginia, and died 1828 in Clark County Kentucky).

William Bush (1746-1815) and Frances Tandy Burris (1762-1828) had a daughter, Cynthia A Bush (1791-1870) who in 1833 married second Zachariah Elkin (1769-1848), the son of Reverend Robert Elkin (c1745-1822) and his wife Sarah Reardon (1750-1820).

Posey County, Indiana was formed September 1814 from parts of Gibson and Vanderburgh counties.
Posey county is located in the southwest corner of the State of Indiana where the Ohio and Wabash rivers meet.
Robb Township was organized in 1817. The township was named for the Robb family of pioneer settlers.

Notes from the Posey County, Indiana Genealogy Trails website:

"The Aldridge family came in 1810 from North Carolina. The father was John Aldridge, who was a blacksmith, and the sons were Samuel, Elijah, Reuben, Henry, William and Aaron. The Todd family, also, came from North Carolina, their native town being Charlottesville. The original members of the family in Black township were William and Hugh. Other families who settled in the township before the battle of Tippecanoe were the Rowes, Dunns, Jeffries and the Andrews, Nestlers, Ashworths, Frenches, Bacons, Kennedys, the Burlisons, Joseph Holleman, Thomas Russell and George Harshman, who located in what is known as Prairie Settlement."

"John Waller took land in Bethel township in 1807, James Farris in 1808, and John McQuidy and Mathias Mounts in 1811."

"On September 25, 1815, a colony of forty-four persons from Cynthiana, Kentucky, located in Robb township, about a mile from Poseyville, near the Sulphur Springs. There are many pioneers on the list of those coming into the county previous to or shortly after 1820 that are not found on the land lists."

[Note: Cynthiana, Kentucky is in Harrison County, Kentucky, and is located roughly halfway between Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky. Harrison County was created in 1793 from Bourbon and Scott Counties.]
