John Elkins, father of Rev Henry Elkins
The records for the Elkins of Madison/Garrard counties, Kentucky start first in North Carolina, then
go to Kershaw District, South Carolina, to Hawkins County, Tennessee, then Laurel County,
Kentucky, and finally to the Western Division, Madison
County, Kentucky. (I did not find a close family connection to the Rev
Robert Elkins of Clark County, Kentucky.)
John Elkins was born about ABT. 1765 in North Carolina and married a Sarah (Long?) who was born about 1775 in North Carolina. I have found information of four of their children:
* The Reverend Henry Elkins who was born Feb 23, 1799 in North Carolina; married first
Mary Anderson; and had a son Henderson Elkins.
* Elizabeth Elkins who was born about 1802 in North Carolina and married
Nathan Williams.
* Jacob Elkins who was born about 1815 in Tennessee and on March 7, 1838 in Madison County, Kentucky married
Rachel Baker.
* Robert Elkins who was born about 1816 in Tennessee on Sept 17, 1835 in Madison County, Kentucky married
Mary "Polly" Agee.

Note:
Kershaw County, South Carolina was named for Col. Joseph Kershaw (1727-1791), an early settler. Originally part of Camden District, Kershaw County was formed in 1791 from parts of Claremont, Lancaster, Fairfield, and Richland counties.
The county seat is Camden, the oldest inland city in South Carolina. This site was settled around 1732 by English traders and farmers who moved inland from Charleston. From about 1800 until about 1867, the county was
known as Kershaw District. During the American Revolutionary War, the British occupied Camden from June 1780 to May 1781.

Note:
Hawkins county, Tennessee, originally known as the Carter's Valley Settlement, is the part of East Tennessee that at one time or another was considered part of Washington County, Virginia, Washington County, North Carolina,
and the State of
Franklin. In 1779, North Carolina divided Washington County into two counties: Washington and Sullivan. In 1783, North Carolina again divided Washington County, creating Greene County, North Carolina.
At its 1786 session, the North Carolina legislature divided Greene and Sullivan Counties to form Hawkins County, including “all that part of the territory lying west of the north fork of Holston.”
