James Holman (Holdman, Holeman)
Born: about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky
Died: about 1886 in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky
James Holman (Holdman,
Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison
County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead
and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and
Rockcastle. (At one time part of Garrard County was the western part of Madison County.)
On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha
Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston.
***
Until recently this site thought the parents of James Holeman, born 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky were James Holeman, born about 1770 in Rowan County, North Carolina and Sarah Wilson, born about 1774 in Madison County, Kentucky. (Sarah Wilson’s mother, Catherine (Livingston) Wilson, after her first husband died, married Joseph Holeman. Joseph Holeman, born about 1746, and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson, were the parents of the James Holman, born about 1770. According to the Holeman/Holman Newsletter, Joseph Holeman, born about 1746, is the son of Thomas Holeman, died about 1798, and his wife Mary.)
However, that does not appear to be the case. My
current assumptions are:
* Joseph Holman and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson, had the
following children: Joseph Holman, Jr., born about 1775 in NC (married Rebecca
Barnes); William C. Holman, born Jan 7, 1778 in NC (married Eleanor
Barnes); John Holman, born about 1781 (married Nancy Martin);
and Elizabeth Holman, born 1784 (married Joshua Moran).
* Joseph Holman and his second wife, Catherine
Livingston, had no children. However, Catherine Livingston and her
first husband, Mr. Wilson, had the following children: William
Wilson, born about 1760; Hannah Wilson (married Alexander Hosich);
Sarah Wilson, born about 1774 (married James Holeman); and Mary
"Polly" Wilson, born about 1772 (married Edward Hockersmith).
* James Holman, born about 1770 in Rowan
County, North Carolina (married Sarah Wilson,
daughter of Catherine Livingston and her first husband, Mr. Wilson)
on Feb 09, 1790 in Madison County, Kentucky. James Holman may or may not
be the son of Joseph Holman and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson.
* Daniel Holeman of Madison County married a Rebecca Elkins on Jun 14, 1809 in Madison County. He may or may not be the son of Joseph Holman and his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson. Some Holman family researchers believe this is the same Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Johnson by making the argument that Rebecca Johnson may have been the widow of a Mr. Elkins when she married Daniel Holman. Until proven otherwise, I'll continue with the assumption that there were two men named Daniel Holeman in Madison County: one married Rebecca Elkins, and one married Rebecca Johnson. (For more information on the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Johnson see Holmans in Hardin County, Kentucky.)
Note: Daniel Holman and Rebecca Elkins may be the parents of the James Holman who married Martha Ramsey.

The results of the DNA tests show that the descendant of James Holeman, born 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky, is:
"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Daniel Holman who was born about 1787 in North Carolina, had children in Tennessee, and homesteaded in Douglas, Missouri;
"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Kenneth Holeman who died in 1871 in Upperfreehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey who is thought to be a descendant of Robert Holeman, died 1709 in New Jersey;
"related" to a descendant of the Elias Holeman (1759 - 1827, Burlington County, New Jersey); and
"related" to the descendants of Thomas Holeman, died about 1798, who moved from Shenandoah County, Virginia to North Carolina around 1750.

Holemans in Knox County, Kentucky
Knox County, Kentucky was created December 19, 1799 from Lincoln County. Laurel County was created December 12, 1825 from Clay, Rockcastle, Whitley and Knox Counties. (Daniel Boone Trace passes through part of Knox County that became Laurel County.) Bell County was created February 28, 1867 from Harlan and Knox counties.
Holemans in Knox County, Kentucky
There are three different groups of Holmans in Knox County. They may or may not be related.
* John Holman (1787-1849) married Mary "Polly" Farris and had children: Hoziah, Sevene, Nancy, Vivian, Lucy Ann, and James W.
* James Holman (1799-1886) married Susanna Stanberry (1804-1886) in 1835 in Laurel County, Kentucky. The 1850 Laurel County census for James and Susanne (Stanberry) Holdman lists: her niece, Malinda Stansbury; two
Holdman children born prior to this marriage (Thos, born 1824 and Permelia, born 1829); and James Holdman, born 1787 in North Carolina.
* William Holman who was born about 1786 and enlisted in the Kentucky militia in Knox County, Kentucky
in 1813.

John Holman (1787-1849) [Parents Unknown]
The John Holmon in the 1810 Census for Knox County, Kentucky is thought to be the
John Holman (born 1787 in North Carolina) who married Polly Farris on Jan 21, 1808 in Knox County, Kentucky (Elijah Foley, minister).
Mary "Polly" Farris is the daughter of John Esom Farris and Martha Lucy
Campbell.
[I have not been able to identify the parents of this John Holman. However, I do not believe this is the
John Holman (born 1786, son of James Holman, 1761-1835, and Lucy Cook) who in 1825 in Tennessee married
Frances Sutherland, the daughter of Daniel Sutherland (1753-1843) and the half-sister of the Elizabeth Sutherland who married a William Holeman (parents unknown).]
From A History of Kentucky Baptists by J.H. Spencer, 1886, Page 240, Vol. I
Elijah Foley (son of Moses Foley, a Baptist minister of Washington County, Virginia) preached a short time in Virginia, then moved to Kentucky.
John Esom Farris was a pioneer settler in Laurel County, Kentucky. In 1783 he was fined for "retailing spirituous liquor without a license" at Humble's Race Paths, Lincoln County, Kentucky. He was on the 1790 tax list for Lincoln County, Kentucky. One of the large original land grants in Laurel County was on the Big and Little Laurel rivers (8000 acres). John Esom Farris secured this grant in 1806 through the purchase of the tax title. In addition to Polly, his children were George, James, William, John Jr., and Nimrod.

Holmans and Stanberrys
There were two Stanberry lines in Kentucky. Are they related?
* Nathan Stanberry: b. 1735 in Middlesex County, New Jersey; married Julia Harrison; lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina; d. 1819 in Wayne County, Indiana.
* Solomon Stanberry: b. 1755 in Baltimore, Maryland; married Jane Lewing in 1791 in Lincoln County, North Carolina; d. 1842 in Laurel County, Kentucky.]
Thomas Holeman (1756-1833) married first Margaret Southerland on May 16, 1778 in Rowan County, North Carolina. [Margaret was the sister of the Daniel Southerland (1753-1843) who married Thomas' sister, Grace Holeman (1754-1810).]
Thomas Holeman (1756-1833) married second Elsa Tugman on March 21, 1791 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Two of the children of Thomas Holeman (1756-1833) married a "Stanberry" and lived in
Kentucky: Rachel Holeman married David Stanberry and James Holeman
married Susannah Stanberry.
---
Rachel Holeman [daughter of Thomas (1756-1833) and his first wife, Margaret Southerland] was born May 4, 1787 in Wilkes County North Carolina and died August 6, 1856 in Whitley County, Kentucky. Rachel Holeman and her husband
David Stanberry (1784-1855) were in the 1810 census for Wilkesborough, Wilkes County, North Carolina; in the 1820 census for Wayne County, Indiana; in the 1830 census for Whitley County, Kentucky; in the 1840 and 1850 census for Laurel County, Kentucky. [David Stanberry was the son of Nathan Stanberry (1735-1819).]
* David and Rachel (Holeman) Stanberry had a daughter, Malinda Stanberry (1807-1876), who in 1828 in Laurel County married
William Stanberry (1808-1870). This is the William Stansbury who moved to
Missouri in 1846. William Stanberry (1808-1870) is the brother of the
Susanna Stanberry (1804-1886) who married James Holeman (1799-1886).
Note: Marriage between two different Stanberry lines in Laurel County, Kentucky:
William Stanberry (1808-1870) is the son of Solomon Stanberry and Janet Lewing.
Malinda Jane Stanberry (1807-1876) is the daughter of David Stanberry and Rachel Holeman. David Stanberry is the son of Nathan Stanberry (born 1735 in Middlesex County, New Jersey; died 1819 in Wayne County, Indiana)
* David and Rachel (Holeman) Stanberry had a son John Stanberry (1820-1884) who in 1842 in Laurel County married
Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Holeman (1824-1910), the daughter (or step-daughter) of James Holeman (1799-1886).
Note: Marriage between two different Stanberry lines in Laurel County, Kentucky:
Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Holeman (1824-1910) was daughter of James Holeman (1799-1886) [son of Thomas Holman and Elizabeth Tugman] and Susanna Stanberry (1804-1886) [daughter of Solomon Stanberry and Janet Lewing]
John Stanberry (1820-1884) was son of David Stanberry (1784-1855) [son of Nathan Stanberry (1735-1819) and Julia Harrison] and Rachel Holman [daughter of Thomas Holman and Margaret Southerland]
* David and Rachel (Holeman) Stanberry had a son Eli Stanberry (1815-1896) who in 1837 in Laurel County married
America Amanda Watkins (1819-1844), the niece the Susanna Stanberry (1804-1886) who married James Holeman (1799-1886).
---
James Holeman [son of Thomas (1756-1833) and his second wife, Ailsey "Elsa" (Tugman) Holeman] was born June 23, 1799 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, married
Susannah Stanberry (1804-1886) in 1835, and died Nov 21, 1886 in Knox County, Kentucky. James Holman was in the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 census for Laurel County, Kentucky, and the 1880 census for Knox County, Kentucky. [Note: Sally (Stanberry) Watkins, age 71, born in North Carolina, (the sister of Susannah Stanberry) was living with James and Susannah (Stanberry) Holeman in the 1870 census for Laurel County, Kentucky.]
Susannah Stanberry (1804-1886) and William Stanberry (1808-1870) are children of Solomon Stanberry (b. 1755 in Baltimore, Maryland; married Jane Lewing in 1791 in Lincoln County, North Carolina; d. 1842 in Laurel County, Kentucky.)
[Question: Living with James and Susannah (Stansberry) Holeman in the 1850 census for Laurel County, Kentucky was a James Holdman, age 63, born in North Carolina. [Who is this?]
In the 1880 census for Brush Creek, Knox County, Kentucky, James and Susannah (Stansberry) Holeman were living with their daughter, Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Holeman, and her husband, John Stanberry, son of David and Rachel (Holeman) Stanberry.
[Conflict: This says the parents of James were born in Ireland, and the parents of Susanna in Pennsylvania.

The Treaty of the Chickasaw Nation was signed on July 23, 1805. The federal government paid off $20,000 in Chickasaw trading debts in return for 2.25 million acres of hunting land in present-day Kentucky, central Tennessee and northern Alabama (territory south of the Cumberland River and south and west to the Tennessee River).
Col. Joseph Hardin (1734-1801) received a land warrant of about 2,000 acres (based on service in a Revolutionary War). In 1816, settlers from Roane County, Tennessee (including two sons of Col. Joseph Hardin) moved into the area. Other early settlers:
John Brazelton and family
Mrs. Elender Thacker, and her sons, William and Shepherd
Thomas Newman, who lived near Sardis in Hardin County.
James Barnes, who was the elected register in 1820
Hardin County was established by the Act of the Tennessee Legislature September 13, 1819. McNairy County was established October 8, 1823 from Hardin County, Tennessee. Henderson County (north of Hardin County and McNairy County was created November 7, 1821 from Chickasaw Indian Lands.
