Land Owners
(Submitted by SD)

In the 1840s, the Federal Land Office in St. Louis, Missouri, contracted with independent surveyors to go through the entire area that included present-day Douglas County, Missouri. As the surveyors completed the field work, they laid out the legal townships, ranges, and sections that have been used since that time to assign land title. No legal claim to Douglas County land was documented prior to the completion of these
surveys.

Questions Regarding Daniel Holeman of Douglas County, Missouri:

------

Where was Daniel Holman in 1840 Census?]

In 1840, the Daniel Holman of Douglas County, Missouri would be over age 50 with a family. He may not be in the 1840 census, but if he is, the Daniel Holman in Livingston County, Kentucky is the most likely candidate. (I have ruled out the "German" Holmans. Also, I ruled out any Daniel Holman that also showed up in a 1830 or 1850 census because our Daniel was in the census for those years.)

Note: Livingston County, located in the southwest area of Kentucky along the Ohio River was created in 1798 from Christian County. Christian County was created in 1796 from Logan County, Kentucky. Logan County, on the border with Tennessee, was created in 1792 from Lincoln County, Kentucky.

Conflict?

The Daniel Holeman in Livingston County, Kentucky might be this Daniel Hillman:

* 1800 Kentucky tax list: Daniel Hillman   Mason County, Kentucky (Mason County, located in the northeast area of Kentucky, was created in 1788 from Bourbon County, Kentucky.)

* 1820 Census: Daniel Hillman    Versailles, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

* 1830 Census: Daniel Hillman   Greenup County, Kentucky, located on the Ohio River in the northeast area of the state, was created in 1803 from Mason County.

------

Who was his wife(s)?

---

Some Holman family researchers believe that Polly Exum is the wife of Daniel Holman of Douglas, County, Missouri. I have found no documentation to support this assumption. [I believe that the Daniel Holman who married Polly Exum is the son of Thomas Holman, died 1798, and his first wife, Mary Ann Thompson.]

Most Holeman family researchers believe that the Daniel Holeman who married Salley Furguson is the son of Thomas Holeman (1756-1833) and his first wife, Margaret Southerland (and the grandson of Thomas Holeman, died 1798).

Some also believe that this Daniel Holeman is the Daniel Holeman of Douglas County, Missouri. I have not found the evidence to support that assumption.

-------

Could the Daniel Holeman of Douglas County, Missouri be the Daniel Holman who married Rebecca Elkins in Madison County, Kentucky on June 14, 1809?  One problem with this speculation is that the same Daniel Holman would have to appear in the 1830 census for both  Madison County, Kentucky and Roane County, Tennessee.
