In the late 1700's and early 1800's, a number of New Jersey families relocated along both sides of the Ohio River: Mason County and Campbell County in Kentucky and Brown County and Clermont County in Ohio.

* Three of the sons of William Dye (1718-1784) and Margaret Salter (1720-1799) were born in NJ and died in Mason County, Kentucky:
** William Dye (1740-1806) William Die (Dye) purchased 300 acres of land in Mason County Kentucky May 3, 1793 (Deed book A, page 277).
** John Dye (1754-1822) John Dye is listed on Mason Co., Kentucky records as early as August 21, 1790.
** Kenneth Dye (1757-1817) Kenneth Dye is listed in land records in Mason Co., KY in 1800, 1801 & 1803.

* Four nephews of William Dye (1718-1784) [sons of his brother James Dye (1720-1764) and Sarah Leach (1722-1810)] were born in New Jersey and moved west:
** Andrew Alexander Dye (1744-1835) first moved to Maryland, then to Greene Co., PA, then to Kentucky, and then in 1803 to Ohio.
** John Dye (1754-1836) was born in Middlesex Co., NJ, married Ruth Applegate in 1779 in Allegheny Co., PA, and died in Brown Co., Ohio.
** Benjamin Dye, born in Middlesex Co., NJ and died about 1785 in Greene Co., PA.
** James Dye, born about 1744 in Middlesex Co., NJ had a son, James Isaac Dye (1770-1862) who married Martha Perrine (1772 - 1849) in Middlesex Co., NJ and then in 1805 [along with his in-laws, Joseph Perrine, born July 16, 1748 and Elizabeth Wyckoff, born Aug 13, 1753] emigrated to New Bethel, Ohio and then relocated to Cold Springs, Campbell Co., Kentucky.

[Note: The sister-in-law of William Dye (1718-1784) and James Dye (1720-1764) was Martha Holeman, born June 28, 1718 in Upper Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey -- the daughter of Joseph Holeman, born about 1685, and grand daughter of Robert Holeman, died 1709.]

* Eleanor Perrine (1777-1823) in 1797 married Joseph Holman, who was born 1773 in New Jersey and died 1823 in Bethel, Clermont Co., Ohio. Joseph Holeman is the brother of Jacob Holeman and the son of Robert Holeman (1712-1790). [Jacob Holeman is thought to be the father of Kenneth Holeman, one of the three “very tightly related” Holmans.] Eleanor Perrine, born May 19, 1777 in Cranberry, Middlesex, New Jersey, is the daughter of Joseph Perrine, born July 16, 1748 and Elizabeth Wyckoff, born Aug 13, 1753, and sister of the Martha Perrine (1772-1849). Martha Perrine (born July 16 1772 Cranbury, Middlesex, New Jersey and died Aug 13 1849 in Cold Springs, Campbell Co., Kentucky) married James Isaac Dye (born about 1770 in Cranbury, Middlesex, New Jersey and died Aug 25 1862 in Newport, Campbell Co, Kentucky). Based on the place of birth for their children, they relocated from New Jersey to Kentucky between 1801-1803.

* Daniel Perrine, was born Oct 27, 1762 in Middlesex, New Jersey, married in 1783 in New Jersey Lydia Cheeseman (1764-1848), and died May 16 1833 in Mason Co., Kentucky. He relocated in 1792.

* Elijah Applegate (son of Andrew Applegate and Lydia Perrine) was born Feb 15, 1793 in South Amboy, NJ and died Feb 25, 1840 in Goshen, Clermont Co., Ohio. He was the first of the Applegate family to relocate (1817) to Clermont Co., Ohio.

* George G Ely was born in 1780 in Middlesex Co., New Jersey, married in 1802 Mary C Mount in Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and relocated in 1806 to Clermont County, Ohio.

* The Ancestry family tree named "Seldomridge - Dorella Family (2)" reported the following:
"Sarah Holeman was born in 1816 in Northampton Twp. (Mt. Holly Twp.), Burlington, New Jersey. At some point she and her parents (John and Nancy Holeman) and at least one brother moved to Ohio where she met and married Abel Penrose Phillips. He was a Quaker from Richland, Bucks, Pennsylvania. They were married in Columbiana, Ohio on 14 Feb 1833. They proceeded to have seven children in Ohio and one in Kentucky before moving to Philadelphia between 1856 and 1860. Abel died in 1864 in Philadelphia and in 1874 she married a cousin, Ellsworth Holeman, in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. She died in Mt. Holly in 1901 but was buried with her first husband and the children that predeceased her in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Philadelphia."

[Note: Ellsworth Holeman, born 18 Aug 1816 in Mt Holly, Burlington Co., New Jersey, is the son of Daniel Holeman, born in 1792 in Juliustown, Burlington Co., New Jersey and Rachel Reeve, born in 1791 near Medford, Burlington Co., New Jersey. The child of Abel Penrose Phillips and Sarah Holeman who was born in Kentucky is Lewis M Phillips, born Oct 3, 1839 in Covington, Campbell County, Kentucky. [Covington, Kentucky is located on the west side of the Licking River at its confluence with the Ohio River, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.] For many years this site thought James Holeman (of Campbell County, Kentucky) and Sarah Wilson were the parents of James Holeman who was born about 1814 in Madison Co., Kentucky.]

Mason County, Kentucky was partitioned from Bourbon County, and is eighth in order of formation. At its formation, Mason County included one-fourth of the territory of Kentucky in that part of the state east of the Licking River. Nineteen counties were later carved from the huge swath of geography that ran from what is now Campbell County at the northernmost point of the state, all the way to Pike County on the Virginia border. Brown County, Ohio is across the Ohio River from Mason Co., Kentucky.

Campbell County was founded December 17, 1794, two years after the creation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, becoming the state's 19th county. Campbell County was carved out of Scott, Harrison and Mason counties. The original county included all of present Boone, Kenton, Pendleton, and most of Bracken and Grant counties. Clermont County, Ohio is across the Ohio River from Campbell County, Kentucky.

THE OLD MAYSVILLE ROAD by Samuel M Wilson (The Ohio Historical Society, Vol. 18, Page 443) discusses transportation from the Atlantic states to this area of the Ohio River valley:
"The opening of Zane's Trace from Wheeling, in Western Virginia, through Southeastern Ohio to Limestone or Maysville on the Kentucky
shore of the Ohio, was expressly authorized by an Act of Congress which became a law on the 17th of May, 1796. Its route lay through Zanes-
ville, Lancaster, Chillicothe, and Aberdeen, Ohio, while its termini were Wheeling in Virginia and Limestone in Kentucky. Besides furnishing
better and more dependable facilities for the transmission of the mails, Zane's trace was designed primarily to afford a landward route of travel
from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the other middle and north Atlantic States. Prior to the construction of this pioneer pathway,
the principal avenue for travel to and from Kentucky was Boone's Blazed Trail through Cumberland Gap, later known as the Wilderness
Road, and still later as the Wilderness Turnpike Road, while the water route by way of the Ohio, with the cessation of Indian warfare, was daily
growing in importance. Added to the dangers from attacks of hostile Indians, there was throughout much of the year an embarrassing un-
certainty in the stage of the water in the Ohio, the upstream journey was a serious undertaking at best, and then as now the travel up and
down the river was seriously impeded by protracted droughts in the summer time, which made navigation difficult and sometimes impossible.
The pioneer road which connected Maysville and Lexington followed in a general sort of way the old buffalo trail which led into the interior
from or near the mouth of Limestone Creek on the Ohio River, across the Licking, at or near the Lower Blue Licks, and thence crossing North
Elkhorn Creek at a point afterwards known as Bryan's Station, on through Lexington, to the Kentucky River and beyond. Maysville. al-
though incorporated as a town by that name in 1787, was, until after 1800, generally known as "Limestone", and in the region immediately around
the town, was often called "The Point". The old wagon road, which followed more or less closely the buffalo trail above mentioned from
Limestone to Lexington, was frequently spoken of in 1784-1785, as "Smith's Wagon Road" because in the summer of 1783 and earlier, one
Smith of Lexington was the first that traveled it with a wagon. There can be little doubt that the Indians and their British-Canadian allies
and leaders, who attacked the Fort at Boonesboro and laid siege to Bryan Station and triumphed in the bloody disaster at the Blue Licks, followed,
to some extent, at least, this primitive roadway."

In addition to the New Jersey Holmans, one and possibly two, other Holman lines used the Ohio River to reach Kentucky:

* Research on the Holmans of Kent County, Maryland by William Uttermollen shows that: in 1774 these Maryland Holmans relocated to Monongahela County, Pennsylvania; and in 1776 they descended the Ohio River and settled at the mouth of Kentucky River.

* Some Holman researchers believe that Daniel Holeman (son of Thomas Holeman, died 1798) and Henry Johnson (who married Rachael Holeman, daughter of Thomas Holeman, died 1798) descended down the Ohio River in the late 1700s. [Until recently this site thought the parents of James Holeman, born 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky were James Holeman, born about 1770 in Rowan Co, North Carolina and Sarah Wilson, born about 1774 in Madison Co., Kentucky. James Holeman, born about 1770 in Rowan Co, North Carolina is thought to be the son of Joseph Holman and the grandson of Thomas Holeman, died 1798. James Holeman, born about 1770, is known to have been in Campbell County, Kentucky from 1807 through 1820.]

The 1800, 1810, or 1820 census records for New Jersey are lost. Joseph Holman (and his sons James and Francis) are not listed as a head of household in the 1820 census for Ohio. However, his wife's father and brother are listed:

Joseph Perrine, born 16 Jul 1748 in Cranbury, Middlesex, New Jersey and died in 1823 in Bethel, Clermont Co., Ohio, is listed in the 1820 census for Williamsburg, Clermont, Ohio with:
Free White Persons - Males - 45 and over:     1
Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over : 1
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44:         1
Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15:     1

Joseph Perrine's son James Perrine is listed with
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44:         1
Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44:     1
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15:         2
Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15:     2
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10:          3

James Homan and Francis Holman (sons of Joseph Holman and Eleanor Perrine) are in the 1830 census for Williamsburg, Clermont Co., Ohio:

James Holman
Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39:         1
Free White Persons - Females - 50 thru 59:     1

Francis Holman
Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39:         1
Free White Persons - Females - 30 thru 39:     1
Free White Persons - Males - Under 5:             2
Free White Persons - Females - Under 5:         2

Also, in the 1830 census for Williamsburg, Clermont Co., Ohio was James Perrine his wife Mary Kain and their son Daniel Kain Perrine.

In the 1830 census for Jackson, Brown Co., Ohio was Kenneth Perrine (son of Henry Perrine and Elizabeth Huston) and his wife Nancy Agnes Rhoten and their son Henry Perrine.

There was a Michael Holman in the 1820 Census for Pleasant, Brown Co., Ohio, and the 1830 and 1840 Census for Clark, Brown Co., Ohio. [I suspect this is a descendant of one of the "German" Holmans from Chester Co., Pennsylvania.]

Question:

Who are the two children of Joseph Holman and Eleanor Perrine who remained in New Jersey? (Why did Daniel Perrin, "The Huguenot," and his descendants in America omit these two children?)
