James Holman (Holdman, Holeman)
Born: about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky
Died: about 1886 in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky

James Holman (Holdman, Holeman) was born about 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky. He lived in the area of Brodhead (Stigall's Stand) and Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which are on the border of three Kentucky counties: Lincoln, Garrard, and Rockcastle.

On June 4, 1835 in Garrard County, Kentucky, James Holman was married to Martha Ramsey, the daughter of Alexander Ramsey, by Baptist minister Benjamin Polston

The results of the DNA tests show that the descendant of James Holeman, b. 1814 in Madison Co., Kentucky is:

"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Daniel Holman who was born about 1787 in North Carolina, had children in Tennessee, and homesteaded in Douglas, Missouri;

"very tightly related" to the descendant of the Kenneth Holeman who died in 1871 in Upperfreehold, Monmouth Co., New Jersey who is thought to be a descendant of Robert Holeman, died 1709 in New Jersey;

"related" to a descendant of the Elias Holeman, born about 1759 and died Nov 01, 1827 in Burlington County, New Jersey; and

"related" to the descendants of one of the Holemans that moved from Virginia to North Carolina in 1752.

 ***

The FamilyTreeDNA study shows that the great-grandson of James Holman, born 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky, is "related" to a 5th great grandson of Elias Holeman (1759 -1827).

Elias Holeman 1759-1827, Burlington County, New Jersey
+Anna ? Holeman - died about 1828
........ 2 Joel Holeman 1783 - 1863, Mt Holly, NJ (See 1850 Census for Burlington Co., NJ)
............ +Ann Curtis - 1860
................... 3 Nathan Holeman 1816 - 1896, Mt Holly. NJ
....................... +Armelia Jordan 1820 - 1897, Spring City, PA
............................. 4 Edwin Johnston Holman 1842 - 1925, Leavenworth, KS

........................................ 5 Chester David Holman 1891 - 1959, Portland, OR

How are they related? Is Elias Holeman (1759-1827) related to Robert Holman, died 1709?

The evidence is pretty strong that Aaron Holman (1714-1782) was the son of Joseph Holman (1685-1741) and the grandson of Robert Holman (died 1709) and that he married Anne Story.

* Question: Did Aaron Holman (1714-1782) and Anne Story have a son, Joseph?

The Will of Aaron Holman (1714-1782) mentions: two sons (Thomas and Aaron); four daughters (Mary, Margaret, Ann, and Tammy); one "step-son" (Jacob Coal); and four grandchildren (Eyas, Agnes, Ruth, Jane Holeman).
The Will of Aaron Holman (1714-1782) does not mention a son, Joseph Holman, but the Execs were his wife and Joseph Holman, Sr. [Who is this Joseph Holman, Sr? Aaron Holman's (1714-1782) father, Joseph, and his brother, Joseph, were both dead.]

Also, the Will of Aaron Holman (1750-1812), son of Aaron, (1714-1782) mentions:
his brother Thomas and Thomas' sons (Joseph and Thomas);
his sister, Margaret, and
his granddaughter, Elizabeth Lane.
No mention of a brother, Joseph.

However, the Will of Joseph Holman, born 1746, states that one of the Execs should be his father, Aaron Holman

Question: Did the "step-son" Jacob Coal mentioned in the Will of Aaron Holman (1714-1782), adopt the name, Joseph Holman, or are these two different men? If two different men, who is Jacob Coal?

Was Anne Story married to a Mr. Coal prior to her marriage to Aaron Holman (1714-1782)?

Was Jacob Coal related to William Cole?

Apparently, the Elias mentioned in the Will of Robert Holman, died 1709, had a son named Robert, and a daughter named Mary. This Mary married a man named William Cole.
Around 1759, William and Mary Cole sold the land of Robert, eldest son and heir of his late father Elias Holeman.

Also, the Elias mentioned in the Will of Robert Holman, died 1709, had a son named William
In 1759 William Holman, 18 years old, son of Elias Holman of Freehold, Monmouth Co., farmer, chooses William Cole of Freehold, farmer, as his Guardian.
This is the William Holman, born about 1740, who married Uphamea Reynolds in Monmouth Co., New Jersey in 1761.

Note: Jane Margaret Lane (1856-1926), descendant of Joseph Holeman (1685-1741) in 1879 married Lewis Worrel Holeman (1859-1940), descendant of William Holman and Uphamea Reynolds.

Who is the father of "Eyas" one of the four grandchildren of Aaron Holman (1714-1782) and his wife Ann Story?

Aaron Holman (1714-1782) and his wife Ann Story had three sons: Joseph (1746-1781), Thomas (born 1748) and Aaron, Jr (1750-1812).

"Agnes, Ruth, and Jane" are the children of Aaron's son (or stepson), Joseph Holeman (1746-1781)
Aaron, Jr. (1750-1812) had no sons. His Will mentions two nephews, sons (Joseph and Thomas) of his brother, Thomas Holeman (born 1748).

I believe that "Eyas" is actually "Elias" and he is a third son of Thomas Holeman (born 1748). Elias may have relocated before Aaron, Jr. (1750-1812) wrote his will. Or, maybe Aaron, Jr. did not think this nephew needed or deserved anything.

Two ELIAS HOLMANs in Burlington Co., NJ

Apparently, there were two Elias Holemans in Burlington County, New Jersey. I have no documentation regarding which one is the grandson of Aaron Holman (1714-1782) and his wife Ann Story, but because of the DNA connection, I believe this is the one.

* Elias Holeman (born 1759 and died Nov 1, 1827 in Burlington, Co., NJ) married Anna (died 1828) and had these children:
** Mariba (Holeman) Stackhouse (born 1779),
** Joel Holeman (born 1783 and married Ann Nancy Curtis),
** Elias Holeman, Jr (born about 1788),
** Anna (Holeman) Lippincott (born about 1798), and
** Elizabeth (Holeman) Frake (born about 1799).
Note: DNA tests show him to be "related" to the three "very tightly related" Holeman men.

Who is this? Is he connected to the "German" Holmans who were in the Philadelphia area?

* Elias Holeman (died Oct 18, 1827) married Anna and had son,
** Daniel Holeman
born Sept 11, 1790 in Juliustown, Burlington Co., New Jersey
married in 1816 Rachel Reeve, daughter of Samuel and Lydia (Tanner) Reeve.
died 1825 in New Jersey

The Elias Holeman who died Oct 18, 1827 may have had a second son,
** John Holeman:
born about 1780 in New Jersey
married Nancy Huffman in 1803 in Burlington County, New Jersey
died 1875 in Goshen Twp in the part of Columbiana County, Ohio that is now Mahoning County.
